Why visit the Algarve?
The Algarve combines cliff scenery, sheltered coves, long sandbank beaches and towns that range from lively to very quiet. It is Portugal's main beach region, and the difference between its western and eastern halves is bigger than most first-time visitors expect.
West or east?
- Lagos and the west — golden cliffs around Ponta da Piedade, a walkable historic center and beaches close to town.
- Tavira and the east — a quieter rhythm, salt pans and barrier-island beaches reached by boat.
- Central Algarve — the most developed resort strip: convenient, but less distinctive.
- Costa Vicentina — wilder Atlantic beaches for surfing and walking, cooler water and stronger winds.
How many days do you need?
At least two nights, and preferably three or four if the beach is the point of the trip. Splitting a short stay between two bases spends your time moving rather than resting.
Best time to visit
May, June, September and early October offer warm weather with fewer crowds than peak August. Winter is mild and good for walking the coast, though many beach services close.
Planning Algarve for your travel context
Families
Eastern towns and island beaches are usually calmer with young children; some western cove beaches involve steep steps down from the cliff.
Couples
The western cliff coast at either end of the day is the region at its best. Build around light rather than around a list of beaches.
Without a car
Base yourself in a town where the beach, restaurants and transport are walkable — Lagos and Tavira both work — and use taxis or transfers for occasional trips.
Algarve: frequently asked questions
- Can I do the Algarve as a day trip from Lisbon?
- Technically some transport makes it possible, but it is rarely a good use of a short trip. Stay at least one night, preferably two or more.
- Should I stay in Lagos or Tavira?
- Lagos for dramatic western cliffs and a lively, easy first base; Tavira for a quieter eastern atmosphere and island beaches.
- Do I need a car in the Algarve?
- A car expands your beach and town choices, but a focused stay in one walkable base can work well without one.
