Days 1–3 — Lisbon, with one day for Sintra

Give Lisbon two full city days and one day for Sintra.

Day 1: Baixa, Alfama and a viewpoint-led introduction. Do not schedule every hour; Lisbon's hills consume more energy than travelers expect.

Day 2: Belém in the morning — the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower are UNESCO-listed and genuinely central to the city's maritime history — then a contrasting afternoon in a neighborhood such as Príncipe Real or LX Factory depending on your interests.

Day 3: Sintra. Choose two sites, not four. Pena Palace plus one other site (Quinta da Regaleira or the Moorish Castle) is a full day once queues, hills and shuttle transport are included. Sintra punishes over-scheduling more than any other day trip in Portugal.

Day 4 — travel north, with an optional stop

Take the train from Lisbon toward Porto. If you want the day to do double duty, stop in Coimbra for the university and Joanina Library, or Aveiro for a flatter, lighter break. Both are legitimate; neither is mandatory. If you prefer to keep the day easy, travel directly and use the extra hours in Porto.

Days 5–7 — Porto and the Douro

Day 5: Porto's historic center, Ribeira and Gaia, finishing with a Port lodge visit or river views.

Day 6: Douro Valley. Give it a full day. Train, small-group tour or private driver all work; see our dedicated comparison before booking.

Day 7: A slower Porto day — market streets, one cultural stop, and the Atlantic at Foz. Ending with sea air rather than another monument is the most common thing travelers say they wish they had planned.

What about the Algarve?

In a seven-day first visit that already includes Lisbon and Porto, the Algarve rarely earns its transfer time. If beaches are your priority, restructure rather than append: Lisbon, Sintra and the Algarve without Porto is a much better week than trying to fit all four.

Why two bases beats four

Every hotel change costs roughly half a day once packing, check-out, transfers and check-in are counted. Two bases give you five usable days out of seven. Four bases give you perhaps three and a half, plus fatigue. For a first visit, depth in two cities produces a better impression of the country than a tour of its train stations.

Frequently asked questions

Is seven days enough for Portugal?
Yes for a strong first impression of Lisbon, Porto and one or two day trips. It is not enough to add the Algarve without cutting something significant.
Should I rent a car?
Not for this itinerary. Trains connect the cities well, and a car is a liability in central Lisbon and Porto.
Lisbon or Porto first?
Either works. Flight routing usually decides it; starting in Lisbon and flying home from Porto avoids backtracking.
How many sites should I book in Sintra?
Two, with timed entry where required. Three is possible only with a very early start and a driver.
