Five Days in Southern Portugal: Lisbon, Sintra and the Algarve Without Living in a Car
Written by TripContext Editorial Team · Reviewed by TripContext Portugal Desk · Last reviewed
| Structure | Lisbon 3 nights → Algarve 2 nights |
|---|---|
| Transfer | Roughly 2.5–3 hours by train or car to the central Algarve |
| Car needed? | Useful in the Algarve, unnecessary in Lisbon |
| Best for | Couples, families, beach-and-culture mixes |
| Best months | May, June, September, early October |
Days 1–3 — Lisbon and Sintra
Use the first two days for the city: Baixa and Alfama on day one, Belém plus one neighborhood on day two. Keep day three for Sintra with two sites, not four — see our Sintra guide for why that limit matters.
If you would rather swap Sintra for Évora and the Alentejo, that is a reasonable alternative for travelers more interested in Roman and medieval heritage than palaces and gardens, but do not attempt both in a five-day trip.
Day 4 — travel south and stop caring about monuments
Travel to the Algarve in the morning. Choose your base by what you want:
- Lagos and the western Algarve: dramatic cliffs, Ponta da Piedade, boat trips to the sea caves, more energy and more visitors.
- Tavira and the east: calmer, flatter, island beaches reached by short ferry, a slower and more residential feel.
- Central Algarve (Albufeira, Vilamoura): most amenities and the most resort-led atmosphere; convenient but the least distinctive.
Spend the afternoon at the beach rather than starting a new sightseeing program.
Day 5 — one Algarve experience, then home
Choose one thing: a boat trip to the Benagil coastline's caves and cliffs, a walk on part of the Seven Hanging Valleys trail, a Ria Formosa island, or simply a long lunch and a swim. The most common mistake in a two-night Algarve stay is to plan three excursions and enjoy none of them.
If you are flying out of Faro, the region's airport makes this shape easy. If you are returning to Lisbon, account for the transfer honestly and do not book an early flight after a coastal morning.
Is the Algarve worth it in a five-day trip?
If beaches and coastline are a genuine priority, yes. If they are not, a better five-day southern trip is Lisbon, Sintra and Évora, with more time in each. The Algarve rewards travelers who go there to be at the coast; it punishes those who arrive for one night on the way to somewhere else.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a car in the Algarve?
- For beach-hopping and cliff walks, a car is genuinely useful. If you stay in one town and use boat trips or taxis, you can manage without.
- Lagos or Tavira?
- Lagos for dramatic cliffs and more activity; Tavira for a calmer, flatter and more local-feeling stay.
- Can I add Porto to this five-day trip?
- Not comfortably. Porto and the Algarve in five days means most of the trip is transport.
- When is the best time for the Algarve?
- Late spring and September combine warm sea temperatures with fewer visitors than July and August.
